Do some urban trekking in Assisi, a small astonishing town, with its Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and alleys and sacred shrines.
You can enter the town from one of its old original gates and walk till the Basilica di Santa Chiara, a 13th-century church build with local pink and white stones. Then, you can reach the Piazza della Minerva, to admire Santa Maria sopra Minerva, a Baroque church that incorporates the original classical facade of the Temple of Minerva, built in the 1st century BC by the Romans. In the area you will find the small and interesting Museo civico e Foro romano di Assisi with Romans remains. The entrance lies in 2, Via Portica and leads to the crypt of the demolished church of S. Nicolò, where the museum exhibits Umbrian and Roman remains, mostly tombstones, cinerary urns and inscriptions. It conserves as well the slabs of the Roman street pavement. A cuniculus leads underneath the Piazza del Comune, to the so-called Forum Romanum and to the stairs that lead from a large terrace of 85 x 45 m to the podium of the temple.
Then, Duomo di San Rufino, the cathedral of Assisi, dedicated to the bishop who first brought Christianity to the town.
Later on, you will walk toward the basilica di San Francesco, with the upper church showing the Giotto’s frescoes, representing the life of the Saint, and the lower church housing the tomb of the saint.
If you want, you can climb to the Eremo delle Carceri, S. Francis peaceful retreat. Otherwise just visit Assisi, The most incredible monument is the Basilica with its Giotto frescoes. There are other beautiful churches, the Basilica di Santa Chiara and the Cathedral of San Rufino. Assisi is not only religious art. Walking on the hill up to the Piazza del Comune we’ll find the Palazzo dei Priori. the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo with its tower and the Temple of Minerva dating back to I century BC.
